We are thrilled to announce the following Keynote Speakers for the Toronto Conference.

Frank Burke

Professor Emeritus

Frank Burke is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Film and Media, at Queen’s University. He has held academic positions at University of Kentucky and University of Manitoba. His research is dedicated to Italian, American, and Italian-American cinema, with a frequent focus on Fellini. He has published several books on Fellini’s films (most recently, A Companion to Federico Fellini and Fellini’s Films and Commercials) and has contributed to Italian volumes on the director. 

Atom Egoyan

Filmmaker

Atom Egoyan is one of the most celebrated contemporary filmmakers on the international scene. His body of work – which includes theatre, music, and art installations – delves into issues of memory, displacement, and the impact of technology and media on modern life. Egoyan has won numerous prizes at international film festivals including the Grand Prix and International Critics Awards from the Cannes Film Festival, two Academy Award® nominations, and numerous other honours. His films have won twenty-five Genies – including three Best Film Awards – and a prize for Best International Film Adaptation from The Frankfurt Book Fair.

Veronica Pravadelli 

Associate Professor

Veronica Pravadelli is a professor of film studies and director of the Center for American Studies at Roma Tre University and a former visiting professor at Brown University. She is the author of several books including Performance, Rewriting, Identity: Chantal Akerman’s Postmodern CinemaAlfred Hitchcock: Notorious; and Le donne del cinema: dive, registe, spettatrici. The Italian edition of Classic Hollywood won two prizes for Best Book in Film Studies.

Guy Maddin

Filmmaker

Guy Maddin is a Canadian filmmaker with numerous shorts and 11 feature films to his credit, including the Emmy Award-winning ballet film Dracula — Pages From A Virgin’s Diary (2002); The Saddest Music in the World (2003); My Winnipeg (2007); and US National Society of Film Critics Best Experimental Film Prize-winners Archangel (1990) and The Heart of the World (2000). He is also a member of The Order of Canada & The Order of Manitoba.

Stephen Gundle

Professor & Director of Graduate Studies

Stephen Gundle is a professor of Film & Television Studies as well as Director of Graduate Studies at The University of Warwick. He holds degrees from the University of Liverpool, the State University of New York and the University of Cambridge and has held academic positions at Cambridge, Nottingham, Oxford and London. His research focuses on fields of film and cultural and political history with a special emphasis on Italian cinema.

Stefania Parigi

Professor

Stefania Parigi teaches at the Università di Roma Tre. Her work is dedicated principally to Italian cinema. She has written and edited books on Rossellini, Zavattini, Pasolini, Ferreri, Maselli, and Benigni. Her recent publications include Paisà. Analisi del filmPier Paolo Pasolini. Accatone; Cinema‐Italy; and Neorealismo. Il nuovo cinema del dopoguerra
